| Artist Statement (1995)
Ever since I arrived to New York City, I have been fascinated with subway stations. I have never seen such a place in my life that conveys so many diversified energies in one place. I was always amazed with its passengers, homeless people, musicians, policemen, graffiti, sound, noise, smell, rhythms, etc. I always sat in the car and tried to see the drama happening around me with my eyes and ears wide open. Though I did not start taking pictures of them until few years ago, but when I did, I immediately knew that I finally found my life-long theme that inspires my creative energy tremendously. Then one day in the dark room, I spontaneously started combining negatives of subway stations and clouds on the same paper. The result encouraged me to do more. After I finished the series of pictures of subways stations with sky and waters, my creative energy expanded to entire New York City. For three years, I ran around the city and shot various monuments and combined them with natural objects such as clouds and water in the dark room. New York has been my central source of energy for a decade and I always appreciate my being here. The pictures I created are artificial but they look so real to me. I often feel the scenes I created are the place I've seen in my dream long time ago.
